Got 50 Cents? Then You Can Share the Love this Valentine’s Day

You might be thinking: why are you asking me to share the love on Valentine’s Day?

Well, this year, a little more than half of all American’s plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day, spending an average of $162 dollars on gifts for their loved ones. At WFP, that’s enough to give a meal to 324 desperately hungry children and families in crisis areas around the world!

So, this Valentine’s Day, go on and show your love! But this time around, how about sharing a piece of your heart with the world’s most vulnerable.

We’re here to help.

With WFP, you can show your love for your sweetheart and support the #ZeroHunger movement at the same time. Check out our top five ways to share the love this Valentine’s Day.

1.  Does someone you love care about solving world hunger? Right now, you can give a gift on their behalf and we’ll send them your choice of a Valentine’s Day e-card with your personalized message! For every dollar you give, $.93 cents go directly to someone in need.

2.  The most popular gifts for Valentine’s Day are candy, flowers and a romantic dinner. Sound familiar? The average cost of a single long-stemmed rose is about $3.50. This Valentine’s Day, why not donate the equivalent to WFP and send 7 meals to someone in need?

3.  Marriage is one of the most traditional acts of love, but this couple went totally nontraditional and donated their entire wedding budget to WFP. The campaign they started – #MillionMealsforLove – went viral. More than 10,400 people have joined their team! You can join the team here and add your own contribution.

4.  Lots of couples opt to cook a romantic dinner at home, but in the U.S. up to 30% of the food we bring home from the grocery store goes to wasteTry making more with less this year and donating the unspent 30% of your meal’s cost. Find inspiration from others who took the #RecipeForDisaster challenge last year and share a photo of your dish with us @WFPUSA.

5.  No matter where you’re dining this Valentine’s Day, you can share a meal with someone abroad via WFP’s ShareTheMeal app which has delivered more than 32 million meals so far. At just 50 cents per meal, it’s the easiest way to show hungry people around the world that you care.

In the U.S., it’s easy to forget that there are people like us in other countries who’ve never tasted chocolate or eaten at a nice restaurant. For them, a simple bowl of warm rice and beans is the highlight of their day.

You can make that possible.
