World Food Program USA Joins Forces With Alkhayyat Foundation To Provide Support To Syrian Refugees

Washington, D.C. — In response to the ongoing crisis in Syria – a conflict that entered its sixth year last month – the Alkhayyat Foundation and World Food Program USA launched a fund matching campaign in the United States to support the U.N. World Food Programme and its lifesaving work reaching Syrians in need.

The Alkhayyat Foundation generously matched contributions from WFP USA donors dollar for dollar. In about one week, the campaign raised enough to provide food thousands of Syrian refugees.

We thank the World Food Programme for their crucial work in support of Syrian Refugees, and we thank the American public for their generosity and continued interest in helping the Syrian people. Said, Moutaz Alkhayyat, Chairman of Alkhayyat Foundation.

The crisis in Syria has become WFP’s largest and most complicated emergency operation. For the past five years, the agency has been on the ground distributing food assistance to families displaced by the violence. Each month, WFP reaches nearly 4 million people inside Syria as well as almost 1.5 million Syrian refugees in neighboring Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. In addition to providing emergency food assistance, WFP also transports aid supplies and staff on behalf of the entire international humanitarian community.

“WFP’s work delivering lifesaving food and humanitarian supplies to families affected by the crisis in Syria would not be possible without the generosity of organizations like this one,” says Rick Leach, President and CEO of World Food Program USA.

The Alkhayyat Foundation’s grant comes at a crucial time, when more than half of the country’s population has been plunged into hunger and homelessness. Nearly 6 million Syrians now rely on WFP’s humanitarian support to survive.
