Hacking Hunger – Episode 12: Mr. Mumo Goes to Washington

Published September 30, 2016

For Peter Mumo, escaping a childhood of hunger and poverty in Kenya began with an empty bowl, a nervous excitement, and the delivery of his very first school meal. These simple meals and the encouragement of his parents would change the trajectory of his life.

“We learned how to share, but we were very fast in eating. Every time we were served we would eat everything and my mother would say, ‘Are you guys well?’ And we’d be quiet. And she’d say, ‘It’s ok. Tomorrow I’m going to cook more.'”

In this episode of Hacking Hunger, M.J. talks to Peter about what it was like sharing a scarce amount of food with five brothers growing up, how he’s helping transform the way his homeland feeds its people and being selected for President Obama’s prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship.
